The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are ramping up their cooperation to counter Houthi forces in Yemen, with the UAE reportedly agreeing to renew financial support for Yemeni government forces. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has committed to providing air support for the coalition. This development is in response to growing security threats posed by Houthi advances and attacks in the region.
This renewed alliance marks a potential improvement in relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have previously been strained due to disagreements over Yemen’s political future and the role of southern separatist groups. The UAE had supported and trained several southern military units before withdrawing its involvement in Yemen in January.
Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive to recapture territory near Marib and the strategically significant Bab al-Mandab Strait. However, progress has been limited due to ongoing fighting and persistent security threats.
The conflict has exacerbated tensions across the region, with Saudi Arabia experiencing drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis. In response, Egypt has expressed a willingness to consider defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia, while the United Kingdom is contemplating requests for additional military assistance.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, with more than 200,000 people reportedly displaced since August. This has placed additional pressure on humanitarian organizations providing emergency assistance to those affected by the conflict.
