Austin Abrams takes on the role of Jay Gardiner, a young diver burdened by the recent death of his father, portrayed by Josh Brolin. In his quest for closure, Jay ventures to California’s Central Coast to search for his father’s remains. However, his expedition quickly turns perilous when a massive sperm whale swallows him whole. Faced with this dire predicament, Jay has just about an hour’s worth of oxygen and must draw upon his instincts and the survival lessons imparted by his father to find a way out.
The film marries elements of underwater adventure with the intense claustrophobia of a survival scenario, all while delving into the emotional depth of Jay’s relationship with his deceased father. Brian Duffield, who directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Kraus, shared insights into the unique production process.
