‘Project Glenwood’ Reboot: Apple’s Siri Fix Costs $1B, Uses Google AI

by admin477351

Apple’s “Glenwood” project, the high-priority effort to fix Siri, is getting a $1 billion-a-year reboot using its rival’s tech. Google’s “ultrapowerful” 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini AI will be integrated as an “interim solution” for the new “Linwood” Siri.

This decision comes after Google’s AI won an extensive “bake-off,” beating OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. It will be used for the most complex “planner” and “summariser” functions, a massive leap from Apple’s 150-billion parameter models.

The new Siri will be a hybrid. Apple’s tech will handle simple tasks, while Google’s AI will manage multi-step, complex requests. This is a reluctant move for Apple, but one deemed necessary by top executives Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell.

For Google, this is a major strategic victory, cementing its role as an “AI supplier.” For Apple, it’s a “temporary fix” as its teams work to build a 1T+ model replacement.

The entire deal is secured by Apple’s “walled-off” privacy system. The Gemini model will run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring Google gets its $1B fee but no access to user data.
