In the first half of 2025, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) was responsible for conducting nearly half of all clinical trials registered in Saudi Arabia, underscoring its expanding prominence in the realm of clinical research and healthcare advancement. The hospital’s research initiatives are supported by a dedicated team comprising investigators, research nurses, pharmacists, coordinators, data specialists, and regulatory and ethics experts. This cohesive unit ensures the seamless progression of clinical studies from initial planning through patient recruitment, trial execution, safety oversight, and data management.
Established in 2020, KFSH’s centralized Clinical Trials service was designed to streamline the research efforts of its clinicians and investigators. This service plays a critical role in handling feasibility assessments, initiating studies, managing trial operations, recruiting patients, handling investigational medications, ensuring data quality, reporting safety, and adhering to regulatory and ethical standards. In the initial half of 2025, the hospital was actively managing 104 clinical trials and had commenced 80 new studies across various medical fields, including oncology, cardiovascular health, autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases, dermatology, gastroenterology, liver ailments, and disorders related to the endocrine and metabolic systems. These diverse studies are pivotal in providing patients with complex conditions access to novel treatment possibilities and generating essential clinical evidence tailored to the healthcare landscape in Saudi Arabia.
A significant milestone in KFSH’s research endeavors was the commencement of a Phase I clinical trial treating the first patient with locally manufactured genetically engineered CAR-T cells for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This trial highlights the integration of local scientific expertise with advanced biomanufacturing and specialized clinical care within a unified research framework.
KFSH’s robust infrastructure for clinical trials also facilitates participation in intricate international research projects. The hospital’s governance in research and specialized clinical expertise lays a strong foundation for collaboration with multinational research entities, ensuring compliance with patient safety, ethical standards, data quality, and regulatory requirements. The institution is preparing to showcase its clinical research strategies and healthcare innovations at the upcoming C3 US NYC Davos of Healthcare Summit 2026 in New York City on September 14.
Globally recognized among leading academic medical centers, KFSH has earned accolades within the Middle East and on international platforms. Its commitment to clinical research excellence and healthcare innovation has been reflected in its appearances in global hospital rankings and recognition of its healthcare brand.
