In a demonstration of Saudi Arabia’s robust defense capabilities, the country’s air forces successfully intercepted a Houthi drone near Mecca on September 15, preventing it from breaching the holy city’s restricted airspace. This decisive action underscores the heightened security measures in place to protect the sanctity of Mecca, especially given the ongoing regional tensions.
The Saudi-led coalition, through spokesperson Turki al-Malki, emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding the holy mosques and pilgrims, declaring these sites as a “red line.” Al-Malki further warned that any attacks threatening these sacred locations would be met with stern measures to deter future incidents. The coalition has previously faced similar threats, such as a ballistic missile attempt targeting Mecca back in 2017.
The Houthis, however, have denied any intention of targeting Mecca. Houthi spokesperson Hazem al-Assad refuted Saudi claims, asserting that their operations have not involved the holy city. This denial comes amidst a backdrop of increased hostilities in the region, with numerous attacks being attributed to Houthi forces.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also weighed in, condemning the reported attack and throwing its support behind the protection of Islamic holy sites including Mecca and Medina. The OIC’s stance reflects a broader concern among Islamic nations about preserving the safety and sanctity of these revered locations.
