FREELANDER is embarking on a significant transformation as the automotive landscape shifts towards enhancing mobility through intelligent technology, connectivity, and lifestyle flexibility. As a brand, FREELANDER aims to redefine itself as a premium intelligent mobility provider catering to the needs of modern drivers and expanding into global markets. The original Land Rover Freelander, launched in 1997, made a name for itself by merging all-terrain capability with passenger comfort and versatility, thus pioneering the urban off-road SUV segment. Between 1997 and 2002, it dominated the European SUV market for five consecutive years, marking a shift in consumer preferences towards vehicles that offer a blend of exploration, flexibility, and comfort.
In a new chapter, FREELANDER has been introduced as a British premium intelligent all-terrain brand at the Night of FREELANDER event during the IBS (Chery International Business Summit). This evolution is a result of collaboration between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery, emphasizing a strategy that combines the brand’s heritage with cutting-edge technology, connectivity, and modern luxury mobility experiences. In response to growing consumer demands for connected technologies and adaptable vehicles, FREELANDER plans to introduce six new SUV models over the next five years, targeting expansion into over 90 countries with more than 1,100 touchpoints globally. The Middle East has been identified as the first strategic international market, highlighting the region’s significance in the premium automotive sector.
The brand’s development strategy focuses on three core pillars: British Craftsmanship, Smart Confidence, and All-Terrain Freedom. The newly unveiled FREELANDER 8 boasts features such as panoramic digital displays, intelligent cockpit technologies, and second-row zero-gravity seating that enhance comfort and connectivity. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip, the intelligent cockpit facilitates responsive interaction and immersive rendering across up to eight displays. Advanced driver assistance systems, including L2+ functionality and smartphone-based vehicle retrieval, are also integral to the vehicle’s design.
FREELANDER maintains its commitment to all-terrain capability through the i-ATS Intelligent All-Terrain System, offering nine terrain modes to accommodate various driving conditions, from snow to expert environments. Additional technological features include dual-chamber air suspension and intelligent terrain management systems. During the IBS event, FREELANDER showcased innovations like the AiMOGA robot initiative, emphasizing the growing integration of artificial intelligence and human interaction within mobility ecosystems.
All FREELANDER vehicles will be produced at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover Intelligent Manufacturing Base, marking Jaguar Land Rover’s first full-vehicle manufacturing facility outside the UK. This facility employs over 1,100 robots across various stages of production to ensure consistency and quality. The brand’s manufacturing operations incorporate intelligent robotics and green technologies to support premium vehicle production for international markets. This latest transformation underscores broader industry changes, focusing on intelligent mobility, global expansion, and connected driving experiences, nearly three decades after the Freelander initially reshaped the SUV market.
